How to Calculate Clock-Out Time

To plan a finish time, add the required paid work duration and any unpaid break to the clock-in time, then account for midnight if necessary.

The clock-out formula

Clock-out time = clock-in time + required paid work duration + unpaid break duration. Add the break because it extends elapsed time without reducing the paid-work target.

Same-day example

Starting at 8:30 AM, working 8 hours, and taking a 30-minute unpaid break gives 5:00 PM: 8:30 AM + 8 hours + 30 minutes.

Overnight example

Starting at 10:00 PM and working 8 hours with no break gives 6:00 AM on the next day. When a total passes midnight, subtract 24 hours from the raw clock value and mark the next day.

Common planning errors

Do not subtract an unpaid break when planning clock-out; it must be added to elapsed time. Also distinguish a target work duration from a clock time—8.5 hours means an 8-hour 30-minute duration, not 8:50.
