Hours Calculator
Add or subtract multiple hour-and-minute durations. The calculator shows the signed total in hours and minutes, decimal hours, and total minutes.
How to add and subtract hours
Enter each duration as whole hours and minutes, then choose whether the row should be added to or subtracted from the running total. Minutes are normalized automatically, so 1 hour 75 minutes should be entered as 2 hours 15 minutes.
Hours calculator example
Adding 2 hours 30 minutes and 1 hour 45 minutes gives 4 hours 15 minutes. That same duration is 4.25 decimal hours or 255 minutes.
Duration totals are not clock times
This calculator combines lengths of time. To add a duration to a particular time of day, use the time calculator. To convert a single duration to payroll decimals, use the decimal hours calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Can the total be negative?
Yes. If the subtracted durations are larger than the added durations, the result is shown with a minus sign.
How are decimal hours calculated?
Total minutes are divided by 60. For example, 15 minutes is 0.25 hour and 45 minutes is 0.75 hour.
