Work Hours Calculator
Calculate the time worked in one shift from clock-in to clock-out. Add an unpaid break, use 12-hour or 24-hour time, and handle overnight shifts.
How to use the Work Hours Calculator
- Enter the clock-in and clock-out times for one shift.
- Select a common unpaid break or enter custom break minutes.
- Read worked time, decimal hours, elapsed time, and total minutes.
How work hours are calculated
Worked minutes equal the elapsed minutes from clock-in to clock-out minus the unpaid break. If clock-out is earlier on the clock, the calculator treats it as an overnight shift ending the next day.
Worked time = clock-out − clock-in − unpaid break
Work hours example
A shift from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM lasts 8 hours 30 minutes. Subtracting a 30-minute unpaid lunch leaves 8 hours worked, or 8.00 decimal hours and 480 minutes.
Common questions
Does this calculator handle overnight shifts?
Yes. If clock-out is earlier than clock-in, it is treated as the following day. For example, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is eight elapsed hours.
Should a paid break be deducted?
No. Enter only unpaid break time. Leave the break at zero when the full shift is paid.
Why are decimal hours different from hours and minutes?
Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of 60. Eight hours 30 minutes is 8.50 decimal hours, not 8.30.
